LAPTOP PROBLEMS
Laptops are portable computers, because they are portable they can be more easily damaged than a PC that is located in static location. Typical faults for laptops are as follows:
Dead Battery
Remove the battery and try and boot with the power supply connected
Dead Power Supply
Check the power supply with a voltmeter-replace where necessary
CD/DVD Installed in a Drive
The laptop will try and boot from the CD/DVD drive first, so if you have a CD/DVD installed it may prevent the laptop from booting
Motherboard Blown
The largest and most expensive board on a laptop is the 'motherboard', when damaged, the only cause of action is replacement. Different laptop styles have different motherboards. Some motherboards can prove difficult to source.
Faulty Hard Disk Drive
One thing in life is guaranteed 'All hard disks will fail one day' why? Because they use moving parts. A faulty hard disk will stop a laptop from powering up. A tell tale sign is that you can hear a 'ticking' sound when they the laptop tries to boot up.
Faulty RAM
Faulty RAM will stop a laptop powering up. If you upgrade the RAM on a laptop or use different RAM sticks with different speeds it will affect the running of the laptop.
Power Socket Damaged
Laptop power sockets are easily damaged. Why? Because people trip over the power leads, or people walk off with their laptop forgetting that it is plugged in.
Back Light Blown
The backlight on a laptop is a thin fluorescent strip the same length of the laptop screen and located at the bottom of the screen. Like any fluorescent strip they can blow. When they do the screen still works and images can be seen but they are very dim.
Back Light Power Invertor Blown
This has the same symptoms as the 'Back Light Blown' above. The Power Invertor provides the voltage for the fluorescent to light.
Cracked Screen
Screens are easily cracked due to objects falling on them, being trodden on, being dropped etc. Cracked screens can only be replaced, replacement screens can be expensive.
Water Damage
Due to the nature of using laptops, water damage is common, usually caused by spilling tea coffee coca cola over the keyboard which then seeps into the laptop, blowing the keyboard and the motherboard.
Faulty Keyboard
Typical faults are, one or a number of keys operate but nothing shows on the screen. The whole keyboard needs to be replaced.
Broken Keys
Heavy hands on keyboards or accidental damage can break individual keys resulting them in being missing. Individual keys can be replaced, without the need for the replacement of the whole keyboard.
